GlenAllachie 17 Year Old Mizunara & Oloroso Sherry Cask: A Masterful Blend
GlenAllachie’s new 17 Year Old Mizunara & Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish is the latest release in the distillery’s celebrated Masters of Wood series, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of Master Distiller Billy Walker. Known for his peerless wood management, Walker has once again demonstrated his skill in selecting only the finest casks to create an extraordinary whisky. This super-premium single malt, bottled at 50% ABV with natural colour and non-chill filtration, delivers indulgent and complex layers of flavour that whisky enthusiasts will adore. The whisky presents a remarkable symphony of spiced apple crumble, dark chocolate, toasted nuts, and orange zest, reflecting the influence of both Mizunara and Oloroso casks.
At the heart of this release are the exceptional Mizunara and Oloroso casks that contribute to its unique character. Mizunara, a rare species of Japanese oak, is rarely used in whisky maturation due to its high cost, porous nature, and the challenges it presents during coopering. Trees must grow for around 200 years before being felled, and the resulting casks are prone to leaking, adding to the rarity of their use. However, Mizunara imparts distinctive flavours of sandalwood, coconut, and exotic spices, bringing an exotic complexity to the whisky. Meanwhile, Oloroso casks, made from Spain’s Palomino grapes, are renowned for their full-bodied, nutty, and dried fruit qualities. The dark, dry sherry style imparts rich, fragrant layers to the whisky, further enhancing its depth and character.
This release is a true testament to The GlenAllachie’s dedication to sourcing the finest casks and their unwavering commitment to quality. The combination of Mizunara and Oloroso sherry casks has resulted in a whisky that perfectly balances indulgence and complexity, offering a luxurious experience to those lucky enough to taste it. With its rich, moreish flavours and the expertise behind its creation, the GlenAllachie 17 Year Old is a celebration of masterful wood management and a fitting addition to the prestigious Masters of Wood series.
