Balcones Texas Single Malt

This is definitely not Scotch pretending to have a Texan accent. Balcones Texas Single Malt has its own character, and quite a big one.

The first impression is rich, dark and slightly unusual. There's plenty of malt sweetness, caramel and dark fruit, but also roasted coffee, cocoa and a slightly charred, woody note. The Texas maturation seems to have worked quickly and aggressively: you get a lot of oak influence without the whisky simply tasting old and woody.

On the palate it's full-bodied and warming. Toffee and dark chocolate come through first, followed by dried fruit, roasted malt and spice. There's something almost smoky about it, although not in the peated-Islay sense; it's more toasted and charred than medicinal or maritime. A little water opens it nicely and takes some of the alcohol edge away.

The finish is long, warm and fairly dry, with lingering cocoa, oak, coffee and spice.
What I particularly like is that it doesn't try to imitate Scotch single malt. The climate, maturation and production methods give it a distinctly American personality while still being recognisably a malt whisky. It is bold rather than elegant, and perhaps a little rough around the edges, but that's actually part of its appeal.
Would I choose it when I wanted the refinement of a good Speyside or the complexity of an older Highland malt? Probably not. But when I want something rich, powerful and genuinely different, absolutely.

A fascinating whisky, and proof that single malt doesn't need to come from Scotland to be taken seriously.
