Description

Originally set aside to become a 12 year old single barrel, this whisky was found to have developed a subtle smoky flavour upon tasting, due to being distilled immediately after peat week, even though the barley used was unpeated. It matured for 14 years in some of Balvenie's finest bourbon casks.

Tasting Note by Balvenie:
Nose: Velvety sweetness, rich toffee and smouldering oak reveal crisp citrus aromas and ever flowing honey musk.
Palate: Candied orange peel is grounded in woody, earthy flavours from beautifully roasted malt and deep vanilla oakiness.

Gateway to peated whiskies

My entire adult life, I've been a Speyside, sherried cask fan. A resolute Glenfarclas fan-boy. But this ? this changed me entirely. I was lucky enough to be at a Balvenie tasting in London at which this was one of the bottles., There's a great story behind it, in that it was a bunch of casks they didn't know what to do with, but after some detective work they realised that after the summer shutdown / cleanse, the first week of distilling left 1 single phenol's worth of peaty goodness in from Balvenie's "Week of the Peat' distillation prior to the summer shutdown.
In short, this has been my gateway drug into peated whisky, it's light in both colour and temperament, an easy sipper with just the barest hint of peat, but enough to set me down the road of appreciation of Lagavulin, Kilkerran, Caol Ila, and many more peated expressions.
For anyone else who's never been a peated fan, I recommend you give this a go and see if it opens your horizons as it did mine.
