Due to its rarity, costliness, and tendency to form knots, it is an infrequently chosen wood for whisky maturation.
Before being filled with whisky, the wood underwent an extensive 36-month air-drying period, followed by a medium-level toasting and charring process. Despite the inherent difficulties, this coveted oak variety imparts luxurious notes of blonde chocolate, accompanied by hints of zesty orange and velvety toffee, resulting in a truly distinctive and indulgent drinking experience.

The Balvenie PortWood 21 Year Old single malt whisky is a result of a unique process where a blend of rare Balvenie whiskies is transferred to port casks, often referred to as pipes, that have previously cradled fine port wines.
In this stage, The Balvenie Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE regularly samples the whisky to ensure just the right amount of character is infused by the port casks. This process enhances and matures the single malt while preserving its original characteristics.

Distilled in unique Straight Neck stills and matured in chosen American Oak casks, it offers a sweet, mellow flavour. This expression showcases the fruity and sweet aspects of our distillery's style, featuring delightful peach, apricot, toffee, and vanilla notes in the finish.
Tasting Note by Loch Lomond:Nose: Distinctively fruity with pear drops and toffee sweetness. Light notes of freshly cut hay in summer sun.Palate: Seville orange citrus notes build in intensity before mellowing into peach and apricot. The casks were expertly aged in premium Pedro Ximénez & Oloroso Sherry puncheons, which added rich, fruity undertones that blend seamlessly with comforting peat smoke using mainland materials.The sweet phenolic concentration of the whisky is 35 PPM and comes from St. Fergus peat a prolonged. A 160-hour fermentation process yields a fruit-forward spirit that is ideal for maturing in highest quality Sherry oak.

With an ABV of 46% and a volume of 70cl, this whisky offers a unique tasting experience. Only 312 bottles of this exclusive release were produced.
