Mortlach - The Lure of the Blood Moon (Diageo Special Release 2022)

According to the legend, a particular night witnessed a blood-red transformation of the moon in the Mortlach sky, marking the beginning of a mysterious alchemical process. Deep within the Mortlach distillery's stills, the blood moon's alluring ruby richness and intricate darkness worked their enchanting magic, endowing Mortlach itself with an uncommon and captivating essence. Radiant with the glow of ruby light, this renowned whisky underwent a final maturation in a blend of Virgin Oak, Tawny Port, and Red Muscat wine casks, intensifying its deep amber hue. Vigorous scents of opulent wine and sweet grape intertwine with Mortlach's signature meaty character. In the quiet hours of the night, amid flickering illumination, the finish ascends to unparalleled heights. It's a whisky to hold dear, where sweetness, darkness, and depth converge in a mystical union that leaves a lasting impression. Tasting Note by Mortlach:Nose: Robust savoury, rich notes evoke a hearty cassoulet with haricots, tomatoes, spicy sausage, and crisp pork belly. Intriguing aromas of grape and red wine entwine with this meatiness then, as the nose develops, become more mineral. A little water changes the picture again, lowering the spiciness and bringing up more rounded, wine-accented sweet red fruit.Palate: Rich and smoothly mouth-filling in texture, while the deep and intense taste is sweetly fruity rather than meaty, and spicy-dry, as the virgin oak makes its presence felt. Magnificently lively, with a richly layered taste, in which hints of ginger lead a spicy dance. A dash of water fashions a delicious, harmonious and strong marriage between fruitiness and black pepper spiciness.Finish: Long and deeply impressive, with power, fruit and black pepper in perfect harmony, a spicy kick as it goes down and a warming glow spreading across the palate. Finally, the palate is left dry, bathed in a glorious afterglow. A drop of water adds a dash of acidity.

  • Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1998 - JPHA Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1998 - JPHA

    Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1998

Dr. Bill's curiosity led him to explore the potential of new charred oak barrels in enhancing Glenmorangie's delicate, fruity spirit. He handpicked a selection of bespoke casks, meticulously crafted to enrich the distillery's single malt. By subjecting these virgin wood casks to charring for the first time, he aimed to create a distinct style of single malt characterized by intense color and spiciness. The majority of these early casks were allocated to the wood-finishing process, where their spiciness harmonized with Glenmorangie's intricate fruity notes. However, displaying the vision of a true innovator, he filled a small number of these casks with new-make spirit, envisioning the creation of an extraordinary single malt. These experimental new char casks were left to mature in a cool, earth-floored warehouse for over two decades. During this extended aging period, the spirit within underwent a delightful transformation, evolving into a lusciously buttery whisky imbued with flavors of vanilla, chocolate infused with hints of orange, nuances of ginger, and a touch of sweet chili. Dr. Bill was exhilarated by the spicy depths achieved in this groundbreaking experiment. Contemplating how to complement the whisky's unique flavor profile, he embarked on a journey to harmonize Glenmorangie's delicacy with the robust, toasty qualities of the whisky. Initially, he layered the oaky nuances with the soft, fruity character of Glenmorangie matured in first-fill bourbon casks. Subsequently, he introduced sweet subtlety by incorporating a portion of whisky finished in oloroso sherry casks. After a patient aging period of 23 years, the resulting creation radiates with ripe fruits, rich orange chocolate, and subtle undertones of sugared almonds and spice. Exceptionally dynamic and vibrant, Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1998 elevates the distillery's renowned elegance with a splendid and spicy brilliance. Tasting Note by Glenmorangie:Nose: Rich and mellow, with hints of toffee, ripe fruits such as pears, plums and baked apples, and some gentle oak. This is followed by some sweet vanilla, fragrant spearmint and a mellow, warming, waxy note, like fragrant incense. Some water releases Glenmorangie’s classic citrus notes of lemon and mandarin orange along with sweet tobacco, a touch of lavender, and the merest hint of ginger.Palate: A zesty, almost effervescent mouthfeel leads into a burst of vibrant fruitiness, some chocolatey notes, a soft butter candy flavour and a hint of toffee, juicy raisins and figs. Then comes a suggestion of orange-flavoured chocolate, clove, ginger and aniseed.Finish: Gentle and soothing with hints of sugared almonds, leather and dates.

Balvenie 27 Year Old A Rare Discovery from Distant Shores

Introducing a captivating new addition to The Balvenie Stories range, A Rare Discovery from Distant Shores. This extraordinary expression of The Balvenie has aged gracefully for 27 years, revealing enchanting notes of muscovado sugar and manuka honey. Like all offerings within the Stories collection, this exquisite bottling brings to life a tale of creativity, innovation, and friendship that paved the way for its creation. The narrative begins with The Balvenie Malt Master, David C. Stewart, and his long-time friend, John Barrett. John had a hunch that he had stumbled upon something truly exceptional when he introduced David to samples of Caroni Rum. David and his team recognized the potential, driven by their creativity and wealth of experience. In 2014, they made the audacious decision to transfer some 20-year-old Balvenie whisky from its customary American oak Hogshead casks into Caroni Rum casks sourced by John. The result was a rum finish unlike any other, and the additional 7 years spent maturing in these ex-Caroni rum casks transformed and elevated the whisky's flavor profile into something truly extraordinary—a Rare Discovery from Distant Shores. This whisky is presented in a meticulously crafted presentation tube, featuring a bespoke illustration by British artist and printmaker Andy Lovell. Andy Lovell, a long-time collaborator with The Balvenie, has created an illustration that visually encapsulates the unique real-life stories that inspired this exceptional expression.
