In 2008, Gordon selected 10 refill casks that had been laid down 40 years prior, in 1968. Within these casks, he found a beautifully light-colored spirit, possessing the ethereal and fragrant qualities found only in the oldest and finest whiskies. He transferred the contents of these 10 casks into first-fill sherry-seasoned casks, carefully chosen for the specific character he envisioned, and patiently nurtured the maturing whisky for an additional 14 years until it reached the desired flavor and character.

Laphroaig Triple Wood is a bold and layered Islay single malt, matured through three distinct cask types to achieve remarkable depth and complexity. The whisky begins its journey in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels, where it gains sweetness and vanilla notes from the charred wood. It is then transferred to Quarter Casks, smaller vessels inspired by 19th-century traditions, which increase the spirit’s contact with the oak—intensifying flavours of spice, cedar, and dry wood smoke.
Finally, the whisky is given a third maturation in European oak Oloroso sherry casks, adding rich undertones of dried fruit, dark chocolate, and warming spice. As part of the Mizunara Series, this expression represents a core extension of the Yamazaki brand, highlighting the artistry and rarity of Japanese Mizunara oak. Known for its distinctive aroma and flavour, Mizunara has been integral to Yamazaki since the 1940s, when scarcity of American oak after the war led to its adoption. The wood is notoriously difficult to work with, requiring trees over 200 years old and more than 70 cm in diameter to yield usable casks, making each release a rare achievement.
Matured exclusively in Mizunara oak for 18 years, this whisky captures the complexity and depth associated with Japan’s most elusive cask type. The Mizunara oak imparts notes of sandalwood, agarwood, and oriental spice, complementing Yamazaki’s refined character.
