After almost a decade of careful aging, a portion of this spirit was meticulously transferred into Château Montrose red wine casks. Sourced exclusively from the celebrated Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, these casks are so limited in supply that only a few could be obtained. The deep, rich color of the wine previously held in these casks is so profound that it is even reflected in the wood of the whisky's case.
Driven by curiosity, Dr. Bill sought to uncover the unique soft, red fruit notes that these casks could impart to the whisky. The SC: 01 2012 vintage was exclusively conceived, cultivated, distilled, aged, and bottled on Islay. The barley used for this vintage was harvested in 2011 and supplied by seven local farmers, all situated within a 10-mile radius of the distillery. The barley is malted to a peat level of 40ppm by maltsters on the Scottish mainland. Afterward, it's brought back to Islay for distillation. According to their legend, a brilliant burst of light appeared in the dark sky above Oban, driven by a celestial entity. Oban, one of the oldest and smallest distilleries in Scotland, emerged in 1794, infusing a lively energy into its tranquil surroundings. Despite its diminutive size, its legendary essence has been foretold in the heavens for ages. The whisky undergoes maturation in refill and new American Oak barrels, followed by a double maturation process in casks previously seasoned with Sherry and Amontillado, resulting in a subtle aroma characterized by hints of maritime salt and sea breeze. After being closed in 1986, the distillery resumed production in 2008. This Revival bottling represents the first whisky to be crafted at the distillery since its reopening. These three Master Whisky Makers meticulously hand-selected and blended three primary cask types: first-fill sherry seasoned Spanish oak butts, first-fill sherry seasoned American oak casks, and ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads.
