In the creation of The Balvenie DoubleWood 17 Year Old single malt whisky, the esteemed Malt Master, David C. Stewart MBE, revisited one of his most lauded accomplishments—a process known as 'cask finishing,' where the whisky undergoes consecutive maturation in two distinct types of casks.
This very technique lies at the core of The Balvenie DoubleWood's character. It begins its maturation journey in American oak barrels, which infuse the spirit with gentle, sweet vanilla notes. Subsequently, the whisky is transferred to European oak sherry casks, where the second phase of aging imparts rich, spicy flavors, along with a profound depth and fullness of character.
The DoubleWood 17 Year Old stands as the elder sibling to the DoubleWood 12 Year Old sharing its signature honeyed, spicy attributes. Pineau des Charentes, a fortified wine, is crafted by blending unfermented grape juice with Cognac eau-de-vie, followed by a maturation process. This distinctive wine is also crafted as a homemade product in the neighboring Deau-Sevres and Vendee regions.
The inspiration for this exploration into French Oak casks came from a suggestion by The Balvenie USA brand ambassador, Lorne Cousin. He urged Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE to consider these casks after a visit to the region with his family, where he fondly remembered savoring an aperitif.
This release marks The Balvenie's initial foray into the realm of French Oak. Pineau, resembling Cognac both in production and flavor, allows them to leverage the growing popularity of this flavor profile, complemented by its premium standing.

Tasting Note by Bruichladdich:Nose: Transporting you to the Bruichladdich Distillery courtyard, the aromas of hot, sweet mash are unmistakable on the nose. This soft, biscuity malt is followed by peat smoke and an assortment of sweet, stoned fruits, with ripe apricots, peach and honey-drizzled pears. Candied lemon peels add a hint of citrus, balanced with butterscotch, honeycomb, chocolate and vanilla ice cream.Palate: Delicate oak notes immediately come through, followed by the presence of smouldering peat. Floral hints of gorse and honeysuckle rise above the malty Islay-grown barley, which is rich and sweet with creamy porridge and cereal notes. The structure of the French oak, together with the sweet vanilla and toffee of the American oak, combine beautifully, bringing a harmonious balance to the palate.Finish: Malted barley and earthy smoke dominate, followed by lingering notes of sweet barley sugar. The SC: 01 2012 vintage was exclusively conceived, cultivated, distilled, aged, and bottled on Islay. The barley used for this vintage was harvested in 2011 and supplied by seven local farmers, all situated within a 10-mile radius of the distillery. Showcasing the unique Islay terroir, this locally-sourced barley is enriched with a detailed cask formulation.
The barley is malted to a peat level of 40ppm by maltsters on the Scottish mainland. Afterward, it's brought back to Islay for distillation. Using tall, slender-necked stills, the distillation process aims for the utmost elegance and delicacy. The spirit then embarks on a tripartite maturation journey.
This vintage is a fusion of sherry butts, first and second fill American whiskey barrels, which were transferred at varying maturation stages into some of the premier Sauternes wine casks sourced from the left bank of the Garonne River in Bordeaux.

The debut whisky from Derby's White Peak Distillery embodies a full lifecycle, having been fermented, distilled, and matured on-site at the Wire Works location, which lends its name to the distillery.
